ARES MONTHLY MEETING
JANUARY 7, 2014

            The ARES monthly meeting was held on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at the Fleming Island Public Library, Fleming Island, Florida.

Adrian Gray, Clay County Emergency Coordinator, called the meeting to order and made the following announcements:

  1. Mike Lee is now the Southeast Regional Director of ARES, and is supposed to have a presentation at the January Ham Fest in Jacksonville.
  2. There are no specific shelters opened due to the extreme cold weather.
  3. The North Florida section meeting will be held at the Hamcation in Orlando in February.

OLD BUSINESS

A plaque was presented to Dave Elmore for ARES Operator of the Year for 2013.

A plaque for Special Services was awarded to Andy Elwell.

All members are reminded to submit their monthly reports in a timely manner.

NEW BUSINESS

With the growing emphasis on digital communication, ARES will be training with D-STAR and packet.  We hope to have more Saturday field exercises this year utilizing digital communication.  ARES wants to increase membership and encourage younger members who use digital communication.

 

Clay ARES is in the process of procuring 501C non-profit status.

The results of the election for new officers is as follows:

Board of Directors:  Perry Ward
Dave Smith

Treasurer:              Jim Winfrey

Secretary:              Kasey Tate

The Board of Directors are elected from the general membership at large.

The proposed by-laws will be posted on the Clay ARES website soon.

The 67 repeater has developed a hick up – this is in the process of being repaired.

Mike Hendershot stated that soon there will be training for net control operators.  Scott Roberts is manager of the net.

            Scott Roberts said if anyone is interested in net control, there will be a manual for use, and a “quiz” following the training.  This will be required for all net control operators.

OPERATIONS

APRS functions are assisting the Coast Guard Auxiliary locally.  The local auxiliary are on board and need a control operator for the field operations.

Mike Hendershot indicated that ELMERS might be necessary to mentor new members.  There are approximately 10-17 people interested in testing and we need to get them into membership.

Mark Fields gave the treasurer’s report as follows:

We currently have $267.60 total balance, and $180.00 cash donations.

A raffle was held for flashlights and there were 8 happy winners!

PROGRAM

Joe Bassett continued the packet training, and emphasized that the net control training will “piggyback” on the training  begun in 2013.
