Members of the Clay County Amateur Radio Emergency Service and Florida Army Military Auxiliary Radio System will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the end of Operation Desert Storm by running an amateur radio “special event station” at Camp Blanding, on Saturday, April 2, 2016.
The “special event station,” (using the Amateur Call Sign of N4G) will make radio contact with amateur radio operators around the world. These contacts are in honor of those men and women who bravely served in Operation Desert Storm. Amateur radio operators, or hams, successfully contact the special event station via radio will receive a certificate commemorating the event.
“Thousands of hams covet certificates and post-cards from special events, particularly those events that recognize military service. This is just one way that we can honor the brave ladies and gentlemen that have, and continue to, faithfully defend liberty throughout the world,” says Joe Bassett, one of the special event radio operators.
This special event station is hosted by Clay County Amateur Radio Service (ARES) and members of Florida Army MARS. Clay County ARES provides communication support for charity and community events and sponsors the Boy Scout amateur radio station KB4SA. Florida Army MARS is a Department of Defense sponsored program which utilizes Amateur Radio operators to contribute to the mission of the Department of the Army. There are 650,000 Amateur Radio licensees in the US, and more than 2.5 million around the world. Through the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) ARES program, Ham volunteers provide emergency communications for thousands of state and local emergency response agencies, all for free.
